FERTILE FRAGMENTS
Alan Paine Radebaugh began the Fragments with nine large acrylic-on-canvas triptychs in 1998. The images for these organic paintings came from sojourns into the deserts of New Mexico. During 2000, he continued the series, expanding the media to include graphite drawings, paintings on paper and aluminum, and three-dimensional pieces. (An overview of these works hangs at James Reid Ltd. in Santa Fe, details below.)

In the spring of 2001, when Alan traveled from the deserts of New Mexico to the mountains of Alberta, the fragments evolved. From the Canadian Rocky Mountains, he gathered not only new images but also pigments, selecting rocks and other organic materials that he crushed and mixed with medium, creating the Alberta Fragments, portraits of Alberta. During his second residency in Alberta in 2002, he painted the Fragment Dialogues, again using natural pigments from the area. (Images of the Alberta Fragments and Fragment Dialogues appear on RadebaughFineArt.com.)

Following a 2002 stay in Maine, where Radebaugh sought fragments in and near bodies of water, he set aside natural pigments and returned to oils, a medium he had used extensively before 1993. The paintings that emerged from Maine, Fertile Fragments, form a dynamic world of saturated color. The Fertile Fragments are composites of fragments and Alan's most active fragment paintings.

Fertile Fragments debuted at Coleman Gallery Contemporary Art in Albuquerque in September 2003. The exhibit, which included eight Fertile Fragment pieces, was enthusiastically reviewed by Crosswinds (Sept 18th), Alibi (Sept 18th), and Albuquerque Journal (Sept 17th).

In addition, Fertile Fragment II hung in the 67th National Midyear Show at Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio during the summer of 2003. Images of Fertile Fragments currently appear in the 2004 Collector's Guide and on Collector's Guide ONLINE.

Fertile Fragment VII will be in the exhibit Albuquerque Contemporary 2004 this summer at the Albuquerque Museum (details below).

As the fertile fragments evolve, Radebaugh has eliminated the word fragments from their titles but the oils, vivid colors, and dynamic compositions continue. This new generation of fragments, the first piece a triptych titled Oracle, will preview at Coleman Gallery Contemporary Art in Albuquerque in June 2004 (details below).
